Oil, coolant, gearbox fluid, brake fluid or just AC water? How to identify a leak under your car by colour and position, and which leaks need attention now.

Spots Under Your Car? How to Identify the Leak and How Serious It Is

· · 2 min read

Finding a spot under your car is worrying, but not every drip is a problem. In Dubai, a puddle of clear water under the front passenger side is usually just AC condensation. Other colours tell a different story. Put a piece of white card under the car overnight to see the colour and exactly where it drips.

Identify it by colour

Engine oil leaks

The most common leak, especially on cars a few years old. In Dubai heat, rubber seals and gaskets harden and crack. Typical sources are the valve cover gasket, oil filter housing, oil cooler, sump gasket and crankshaft seals. Many German engines are known for oil filter housing and valve cover leaks.

Why it matters: oil dripping onto a hot exhaust can smoke or even catch fire, oil on the drive belt can make it slip or fail, and a leak that empties the engine destroys it. Check your oil level and top up with the correct oil until it is repaired.

Coolant leaks

Coolant leaks lead to overheating, which can damage the engine quickly in summer. Look for drips at the front of the car, and white or green crust on hoses, the radiator or the water pump. A sweet smell inside the cabin can mean a heater-core leak. See our overheating guide.

Gearbox fluid leaks

Red fluid in the middle of the car usually comes from the gearbox pan, cooler lines or seals. Low gearbox fluid causes slipping and harsh shifts. See gearbox jerking or slipping.

Brake fluid and fuel leaks: stop

A soft brake pedal with fluid near a wheel, or a strong fuel smell, means don't drive the car. Arrange recovery.

What not to do

  • Don't rely on "stop leak" additives; they can block small passages and only delay the repair.
  • Don't keep topping up for months; small leaks usually get bigger.

How a garage finds the source

Oil and fluid spread with airflow, so the drip point is not always the source. We clean the area, add UV dye where needed, and inspect on the lift to find the exact seal or part, then quote before repairing. More about engine and oil-leak repair.
