Even a small accident is stressful, and the process in Dubai has a few rules that catch people out, especially that insurers generally need a police report before they will pay for repairs. Here is the process step by step. Requirements can differ between insurers and change over time, so always check your own policy.
1. At the scene
- Make sure everyone is safe. Switch on hazard lights and, if it is safe and the cars can move, move them out of traffic.
- If anyone is injured, call 999 straight away.
- Take clear photos of both cars from several angles, the number plates, the damage and the road position.
- Exchange details with the other driver.
2. Report it to Dubai Police
Minor accidents in Dubai can usually be reported through the Dubai Police app; otherwise call 999. A police report is required by insurers for almost every claim, including minor damage and hit-and-run. Report promptly: many policies expect notification within a short time.
3. Understand the report colour
UAE accident reports are commonly described by colour:
| Report | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Green | The other party is at fault |
| Red | You are at fault |
| White | Fault not determined, or no other party identified |
With a green report you usually claim from the other driver's insurer; with a red report you claim on your own policy if it is comprehensive.
4. Notify your insurer
Insurers typically ask for the police report, vehicle registration (Mulkiya), driving licence, Emirates ID and photos. Many have an app or online claim form.
5. Survey and approval
The insurer usually inspects the car (directly or through a surveyor) and approves the repair estimate before work starts. Depending on your policy, repairs are done at the agency or at an insurer-approved garage, so check which applies to you before authorising work.
6. Excess and no-claims
If you claim on your own policy, you may pay an excess and your no-claims discount may be affected at renewal. For small damage, compare the repair cost with your excess before deciding whether to claim.
7. The repair
A proper accident repair covers more than the visible dent:
- Checking for hidden damage behind bumpers: brackets, sensors, radiator and condenser
- Panel repair or replacement and colour-matched paint
- Checking parking sensors, cameras and driver-assistance radar after the repair; some need calibration
- Checking alignment if a wheel was hit
Paying privately
For minor damage you may prefer to pay privately rather than claim. A workshop can give you a written estimate so you can compare. Note that repairs to the car's structure or legal requirements still apply either way.
At Partinn Auto Service we repair accident damage on all makes, prepare estimates for insurers or repair privately, and check sensors and safety systems afterwards. More about accident and body repair.
