Car Pulling to One Side? Alignment, Tyres or Brakes: How to Tell

Car drifting left or right, or pulling only when braking? The usual causes (tyre pressure, alignment, tyres, brakes, suspension) and how a garage finds the fault.

Car Pulling to One Side? Alignment, Tyres or Brakes: How to Tell

· · 2 min read

A car that drifts to one side on a straight road, or pulls when you brake, is more than annoying: it wears tyres quickly and can be a safety issue. The good news is that the cause is usually simple, and when the car pulls is the best clue.

First check: tyre pressure

A tyre that is low on one side is the most common and cheapest cause. Check all four tyres cold, using the pressures on the driver's door sticker. In Dubai heat a slow puncture can drop pressure quickly.

Pulls all the time while driving

  • Wheel alignment: hitting a kerb, pothole or speed bump hard can knock the toe or camber out. You often see the steering wheel off-centre too.
  • Tyre problem: uneven wear, mixed tyre brands or a tyre with an internal fault ("tyre pull") can make the car drift. Swapping the front tyres left to right is a simple test: if the pull changes side, it's a tyre.
  • Worn suspension or steering parts: worn bushes, ball joints or tie-rod ends let the wheel move.
  • Road camber: most roads slope slightly to drain water, so a gentle drift on some roads can be normal. Test on a flat, straight road.

Pulls only when braking

  • Sticking brake caliper: one side brakes harder; often with a hot wheel or burning smell after driving.
  • Uneven pads or contaminated pads on one side.
  • Worn suspension bushes, which let the wheel move under braking; common on heavier German cars.

Pulls when accelerating

Usually "torque steer" on front-wheel-drive cars, made worse by worn engine mounts or uneven tyres.

Why it matters

  • Poor alignment wears tyres unevenly, often on the inner edge where you don't see it.
  • A sticking caliper overheats the brake and wastes fuel.
  • Worn steering joints get worse and can affect control.

How a garage finds it

  1. Tyre pressures, wear patterns and tyre age
  2. A road test, including braking
  3. A lift inspection of suspension and steering joints
  4. A computerised alignment check with before and after readings

Alignment is only worth doing once worn parts are replaced, otherwise it won't hold. At Partinn Auto Service we check the parts first, then align. More about wheel alignment · suspension repair · brake repair.
