Why Is My Car Using More Fuel? 10 Causes and How to Fix Them

Car suddenly using more petrol? Ten common causes, from tyre pressure and AC use to sensors, injectors and dragging brakes, plus fuel-saving tips for Dubai.

Why Is My Car Using More Fuel? 10 Causes and How to Fix Them

· · 2 min read

If you're filling up more often than you used to, the car is telling you something. Some causes are habits or seasonal (yes, summer AC use costs fuel), others are faults that get worse and cost more if ignored.

First, measure it properly

Fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, then fill up again and divide litres by kilometres. The car's on-board figure is a useful guide but not always exact. Compare like with like: summer city driving will always use more than winter motorway trips.

10 common causes

1. Low tyre pressure

Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance. Check pressures cold every couple of weeks.

2. Heavy AC use and idling

The AC compressor is driven by the engine, and idling with the AC on burns fuel while you go nowhere. In Dubai summer some increase is normal; a weak AC that runs constantly makes it worse.

3. Clogged air filter

Dust and sand clog filters faster here. Modern engines compensate, but a very dirty filter still hurts performance.

4. Worn spark plugs or ignition coils

Weak sparks mean incomplete burning, misfires and wasted fuel, often with a rough idle or check-engine light.

5. Dirty or leaking injectors

Poor spray patterns or dripping injectors waste fuel and can cause black smoke. See exhaust smoke colours.

6. Faulty sensors

A failing oxygen sensor, mass airflow sensor or coolant temperature sensor can make the engine computer add too much fuel. These usually log fault codes.

7. Thermostat stuck open

If the engine never reaches its normal temperature, it runs richer. The temperature gauge staying low is a clue.

8. Dragging brakes

A sticking caliper or parking brake holds the car back. Signs include a hot wheel, a burning smell or the car pulling to one side.

9. Wheel alignment

Poor alignment makes tyres scrub along the road. See car pulling to one side.

10. Wrong or old engine oil

Oil that is too thick for the specification, or old oil, increases friction. Use the approval your handbook specifies.

Habits that save fuel in Dubai

  • Smooth acceleration and anticipating traffic
  • Steady motorway speeds; consumption rises sharply at high speed
  • Avoid long idling; park in shade so the AC has less work to do
  • Remove unnecessary weight and roof boxes
  • Combine short trips; a cold engine uses more fuel

When to get it checked

If consumption has jumped suddenly, or comes with a warning light, rough running, smoke or a smell, a diagnosis is worth it: the fault behind it often damages other parts too. At Partinn Auto Service we read fault codes and live fuel-trim data, check sensors, injectors, ignition and brakes, and explain what we find. A full diagnostic check is free with any major service.
