Mercedes Service A vs Service B: What Each Includes and When It Is Due

What is the difference between Mercedes-Benz Service A and Service B? What each includes, how ASSYST decides when they are due, and what Dubai owners should add.

Mercedes Service A vs Service B: What Each Includes and When It Is Due

· · 3 min read

If you drive a Mercedes-Benz, your dashboard will at some point tell you "Service A" or "Service B" is due. They are not two different garages' names for the same thing: they are two levels of service in Mercedes' own maintenance system. Here is what each includes and how to plan for them in Dubai.

How Mercedes decides when service is due: ASSYST

Most modern Mercedes models use ASSYST (Active Service System), sometimes called the Flexible Service System. Instead of a fixed mileage, the car calculates the next service from time, distance and how it is driven, and shows the result in the instrument cluster. In practice most cars end up on roughly a yearly cycle, with Service A and Service B alternating.

Service A: the smaller service

Service A focuses on the essentials:

  • Engine oil change with oil approved to the correct MB sheet for your engine (for example 229.5, 229.51 or 229.52)
  • New oil filter
  • Check and top up fluids: coolant, brake fluid level, washer fluid
  • Check tyre condition and set pressures
  • Inspect brake pads and discs
  • A general check of lights, wipers and visible components
  • Reset the ASSYST service indicator

Service B: the larger service

Service B includes everything in Service A, plus:

  • Cabin (dust/pollen) filter replacement
  • Brake fluid replacement (Mercedes specifies this every two years)
  • A more detailed inspection of the underbody, steering, suspension, exhaust and drivetrain
  • Checks of more systems, such as the battery and charging

The extra numbers: "A1", "B3" and so on

You may see a code such as "B3" rather than just "B". The letter is the base service and the numbers stand for additional work due at that visit, such as filters, spark plugs or other items set by time or mileage. The exact meaning depends on the model, so a workshop reads the service data from the car to see what is actually due instead of adding everything by default.

Items that come up by mileage or age

  • Air filter: by mileage, but Dubai dust often shortens its life
  • Spark plugs: at the interval for your engine; turbo engines are sensitive to worn plugs
  • Automatic gearbox fluid: not part of the basic A/B list on many models, but heat ages it; many specialists change it around 60,000 to 80,000 km in hot climates
  • Coolant: a long-life interval, with leaks checked every visit

What to add in Dubai

  • Don't stretch the interval. Heat, dust and stop-start traffic count as severe use. Many Dubai owners service yearly or around every 10,000 km, whichever comes first.
  • Check for oil leaks around the filter housing and oil cooler: common on several Mercedes engines as seals harden.
  • Check AIRMATIC on cars with air suspension: a car that sits low after parking has a leak, and catching it early protects the compressor.
  • Test the battery before summer, including the 48-volt system on mild-hybrid models.
  • Check the AC before the hottest months.

Can an independent garage do Service A and B?

Yes, provided they follow the Mercedes schedule, use correctly approved oils and quality parts, reset ASSYST with diagnostic software and give you an itemised record. If your car is still under a warranty or a prepaid service package, check its terms first.

At Partinn Auto Service we carry out Mercedes Service A and B with Mercedes-specific diagnostic software, read what the car says is due, and tell you what is needed rather than adding items by default. More about Mercedes servicing · Mercedes-Benz specialist page.
