Car Won't Start? Battery, Starter, Fuel or Immobiliser: How to Tell

Car not starting in Dubai? Clicking, no sound, cranking but not firing, or starting then dying: what each symptom usually means and what to do next.

Car Won't Start? Battery, Starter, Fuel or Immobiliser: How to Tell

· · 3 min read

A car that won't start always seems to happen at the worst moment, often in a hot car park. In the UAE, heat makes it more common, because it shortens battery life. What the car does when you try to start it tells you a lot about the cause.

First, the simple checks

  • Is the gear selector fully in P (or N)? Many cars won't crank otherwise.
  • Is your foot firmly on the brake (and clutch on a manual)?
  • Is the key fob battery weak? Try holding the fob against the start button or the marked spot on the steering column.
  • Is there fuel? The gauge can be wrong.

Symptom 1: rapid clicking, dim lights

Most likely: a flat or weak battery, or a loose or corroded terminal. The battery has enough power for the lights but not the starter. A jump start usually gets you going, but find out why it went flat: an old battery, a charging fault or something draining it while parked.

Symptom 2: a single click, or nothing, with bright lights

Likely: the starter motor or its relay or wiring. The battery seems fine, but the starter isn't turning. On some cars a faulty gear-position switch or brake switch has the same effect.

Symptom 3: the engine cranks normally but won't fire

  • Fuel supply: a failed fuel pump or relay (you may not hear the usual hum when you switch on).
  • Immobiliser: a security light flashing on the dash means the car doesn't recognise the key.
  • Sensors: a failed crankshaft position sensor stops the engine computer firing the engine; heat can make it fail intermittently.
  • Ignition: less common on modern cars, but possible.

Symptom 4: slow, laboured cranking

Usually a weak battery, especially one more than two years old in Dubai, or high resistance in a cable. Test it before it leaves you stranded.

Symptom 5: starts, then dies after a few seconds

Often the immobiliser, a fuel delivery problem, or an air or idle control fault.

Symptom 6: dash goes dark or the car loses power while driving

This points to the charging system (alternator or belt), not the battery itself. A battery or charging warning light while driving is a sign to head to a workshop straight away.

Jump starting safely

  1. Check your handbook: many modern cars have dedicated jump points under the bonnet.
  2. Red clamp to the flat battery's positive (+), then to the good battery's positive.
  3. Black clamp to the good battery's negative (−), then to bare metal on the dead car, away from the battery.
  4. Start the good car, wait a minute, then start yours. Remove clamps in reverse order.

On many German cars a deeply flat battery can set off warning lights afterwards; a diagnostic check clears them properly.

Why batteries die so often in Dubai

Heat speeds up the chemistry inside the battery. Many batteries here last around two to three years. Read our battery care guide.
