Many people think cold is a battery's enemy, but in the UAE it is heat. In Dubai many batteries last only about two to three years, and they often fail suddenly without much warning.
Why batteries fail faster in heat
- Faster chemical reactions wear the battery from the inside.
- Evaporation of electrolyte in conventional batteries.
- Internal corrosion of plates and terminals.
- Overcharging when the charging system is not working correctly.
- Higher electrical load from the AC and fans.
- Parking in the sun for hours heats the engine bay.
Battery types
- Conventional (lead-acid): economical but needs checking.
- Maintenance-free: sealed, no topping up.
- AGM: for modern premium cars and start-stop systems; copes with frequent cycling.
- EFB: an improved type for simpler start-stop systems.
- Lithium: in some hybrids, EVs and sports models.
The key rule: fit the same type the car came with. Putting a standard battery in place of an AGM on a modern German car shortens its life and causes electrical faults.
Signs your battery needs attention
- Slow cranking, especially in the morning
- Dim lights or a battery warning light
- A swollen case or corroded terminals
- Needing jump starts
- Random electrical warnings, or start-stop no longer working
- A rotten-egg smell: have it checked immediately
- The battery is more than two years old in Dubai
How to make your battery last longer
- Test it before every summer and at each service
- Keep terminals clean and connections tight
- Park in the shade where possible
- Avoid very short trips that never recharge it
- Switch accessories off before starting
- Avoid draining it completely
- Use a battery maintainer if the car will stand for weeks
- Have the alternator checked: weak or excessive charging kills batteries
- Replace it before it fails completely, especially before summer
Choosing the right battery
Check the handbook for size and type (AGM, EFB or standard), cold cranking amps (CCA) and reserve capacity, choose a reputable brand, and make sure it suits a start-stop system if your car has one.

- Test the battery and alternator to find the real cause
- Choose the correct type and size
- Remove it safely and clean the terminals and tray
- Fit the new battery
- Register the battery to the car on modern models
- Check charging and clear stored faults
Premium cars
BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Porsche adjust charging to the battery's age and type, so a new battery must be registered with diagnostic software. Without registration it can be overcharged and fail early. Some newer Mercedes models also have a 48-volt system that needs specialist diagnosis.
In an emergency
If the battery dies while parked, jump start it in the right order: positive to positive, then negative to bare metal away from the battery. If the car dies while driving, the alternator is the more likely cause. More about battery testing and replacement.
