A used car in the UAE can look spotless and still hide an old accident, flood damage or a gearbox on its way out. Twenty minutes with this checklist, plus a professional inspection for anything expensive, can save you from a bad buy or give you real negotiating power.
1. Paperwork and history
- Registration card (Mulkiya): make sure the chassis number (VIN) matches the car, usually visible at the base of the windscreen and on the door pillar.
- Service history: stamps, invoices or dealer records. Compare service mileages with the odometer; big gaps or jumps are a warning.
- Vehicle history: check the VIN through official channels and history reports for accidents, previous owners and imports.
- Loans and fines: a car still under a bank loan or with unpaid fines cannot be transferred cleanly.
- GCC specification or import: GCC-spec cars are built for this climate, with uprated cooling and AC. Imports can be fine, but some come from flood or salvage auctions abroad, so check the history carefully.
2. Bodywork and paint
- Panel gaps: compare the gaps around doors, bonnet and boot. Uneven gaps suggest accident repair.
- Paint: look along the panels in daylight for colour or texture differences. A paint thickness gauge is more reliable; resprayed panels usually read much thicker than factory paint.
- Overspray and tape lines on rubber seals and trim.
- Glass: check every window for cracks, and the date codes on the glass; one that doesn't match may have been replaced after an accident.
- Underneath: rust, bent parts, fresh welding or scraped chassis rails.
3. Signs of flood damage
After heavy rain in the UAE, flood-damaged cars can reach the market. Look for a musty smell, damp or new-looking carpets in an old car, rust on seat rails and bolts under the seats, mud or water lines in the boot or spare-wheel well, and fogging inside lights. Intermittent electrical faults are another clue. See our guide to flood-damaged cars.
4. Tyres and brakes
- Tread depth and even wear. Uneven wear can mean alignment or suspension problems.
- Tyre age from the DOT code. Old tyres crack in the sun and should be replaced.
- Discs with a deep lip at the edge are worn; pulsing through the pedal means uneven discs.
5. Engine
- Start it from cold if you can. Listen for rattles in the first seconds (a timing-chain warning sign on some engines).
- Look for oil and coolant leaks, and for milky residue under the oil cap.
- Watch the exhaust: blue smoke means burning oil, white smoke that doesn't clear can mean coolant, black smoke means rich running.
- Check that the idle is smooth. Idle vibration was the most common issue in a 2026 dubizzle analysis of over 20,000 inspections.
6. Gearbox and drive
- Shifts should be smooth up and down, with no slipping, flare or harsh engagement into Drive and Reverse.
- Dual-clutch gearboxes should pull away without judder.
- On 4x4s, listen for clunks in tight turns.
7. Air conditioning
In the UAE this is critical. Run the AC on full for ten minutes, including while idling. It should stay cold, without noises or smells. AC repairs on modern cars can be costly.
8. Electronics and interior
- Test every window, mirror, seat motor, screen, camera and sensor.
- No warning lights on the dashboard after start-up.
- Wear on the steering wheel, pedals and driver's seat should match the mileage; heavy wear on a low-mileage car is a red flag for odometer tampering.
9. Test drive
Drive on a mix of roads and speeds. The car should track straight, brake straight, and not knock over bumps or vibrate at motorway speed.
10. Get a professional pre-purchase inspection
A workshop can scan every control unit for stored faults, lift the car to inspect the underbody, measure paint and check things you cannot see on the driveway. If a seller refuses an inspection, walk away: there is always another car.
At Partinn Auto Service our pre-purchase inspection covers a full computer scan, engine, gearbox, cooling, suspension, steering and brakes on the lift, an AC test, body and paint checks, tyres and a road test, with a clear summary of what we found and what it is likely to cost. The seller can bring the car to our DIP 2 workshop. More about our pre-purchase inspection.
