Dubai's dry climate might seem safe from rust, but sea air, high summer humidity and sand all cause hidden corrosion, especially under the car.
Why rust happens in Dubai
- Salty sea air: especially for cars parked near the coast.
- High humidity: condenses on metal overnight.
- Extreme heat: speeds up chemical reactions and cracks protective coatings.
- Sand and dust: scratch the paint and trap moisture.
- Frequent washing: water trapped in seams and drain holes.
How rust forms
Rust is iron reacting with oxygen and water. It usually starts at a paint chip or somewhere water is trapped, then spreads under the paint before it shows on the surface.
Where rust usually starts
- Underbody and chassis
- Wheel arches
- Door bottoms and sills
- Exhaust system
- Engine bay
- Boot floor
- Paint chips and old accident repairs
- Brake parts
Early signs
- Reddish-brown spots on the surface
- Bubbling or blistering paint
- Flaking paint
- Rough or pitted metal
- Holes in advanced cases
- Corrosion on electrical connectors
How to prevent it
- Wash regularly, including underneath, to remove salt and sand.
- Underbody protection for cars parked near the sea.
- Repair chips straight away before water reaches the metal.
- Keep drain holes clear in doors and sills.
- Park under cover where possible.
- Inspect regularly on the lift at each service.
- Protect the paint with wax, sealant, ceramic coating or protection film.
Treating rust
- Surface rust: clean, treat and touch up.
- Moderate rust: remove paint and rust, treat the metal and repaint to match.
- Severe rust: may need the damaged section cut out and a new one welded in.
- Underbody and exhaust: treat and protect, and replace corroded parts.
Premium cars
Many modern cars use aluminium panels and advanced coatings. Aluminium does not rust like steel but corrodes differently, especially where it touches steel. Repairing these panels needs experience and the right tools.
What you can do yourself
Wash regularly with attention to the underbody, dry the car well, touch up small chips, clear drain holes, wax every few months and take a quick look around the car each month.
A simple schedule
- Monthly: thorough wash and visual check
- Every 3 months: wax or paint protection
- Every 6 months: underbody check on a lift
- Yearly: full inspection and renew protection
- After floods or beach trips: wash the underbody straight away
