"How often should I change my oil?" is one of the most common questions any garage in Dubai hears. The honest answer is: it depends on your car and how you drive it. Here is how to work it out.
Start with your manufacturer's schedule
Your owner's manual or service booklet gives the interval in kilometres and months; you change the oil at whichever comes first. Intervals vary a lot between brands. Gulf News has reported that many Asian brands recommend shorter intervals, while European and German makers often allow longer ones, and many modern cars now calculate the interval themselves (Mercedes ASSYST, BMW Condition Based Service, VW/Audi LongLife).
Why Dubai usually means "severe use"
Most manuals list a shorter interval for "severe" or "difficult" conditions. In the UAE, many drivers meet that description:
- Outside temperatures above 40°C for months
- Stop-start traffic and long idling with the AC on
- Dust and sand
- Many short trips where the engine never fully warms up
- Towing or desert driving
Heat and idling break oil down faster, even if the odometer doesn't move much.
A practical guide
| How you drive | Typical interval |
|---|---|
| Mostly motorway, moderate mileage | Follow the manufacturer's normal interval |
| Mixed city and motorway in Dubai | About 10,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first |
| Heavy traffic, lots of idling, short trips, towing or desert | About 5,000 to 7,500 km, or every 6 months |
These are general guides; your manual and the car's own service indicator come first.
Low mileage? Time still counts
Oil ages even when the car is parked, especially in heat. If you drive very little, change it at least once a year.
The right oil matters as much as the timing
- Use the approval, not just the viscosity. European cars specify approvals such as MB 229.5 (Mercedes), BMW Longlife-01 or LL-17 FE+, and VW 504 00 / 507 00. Many Japanese cars specify a viscosity such as 0W-20 with an API or ILSAC rating. The approval code is printed on the bottle.
- Fully synthetic oil copes better with heat and is specified for most modern engines.
- Always change the filter with the oil.
Signs your oil needs changing sooner
- The oil or service light is on
- The level drops between services (check it monthly, engine cold, on level ground)
- The oil looks very dark and gritty, or milky (milky can mean coolant; get it checked)
- The engine sounds louder or rougher, especially on cold start
What a proper oil change includes
Oil to the correct approval, a new filter, a check of all fluid levels, a look underneath for leaks, a check of tyres, brakes and battery, and a reset of the service indicator. At Partinn Auto Service our oil change offer starts from AED 99; the final price depends on your engine's oil specification and capacity. More about oil change and servicing.
