Switch on the AC and get a blast of musty air? You are not alone: in a hot, humid climate where the AC runs most of the year, smells are one of the most common complaints. The type of smell tells you a lot about the cause, and some smells are more serious than others.
Musty or "old socks" smell
The most common one. The evaporator, hidden behind the dashboard, is cold and wet while the AC runs. Dust, pollen and bacteria collect on it and in the cabin filter, and mould grows when the system sits warm and damp after you park.
Fix: replace the cabin filter and have the evaporator and air ducts cleaned and disinfected. Germany's ACE motoring club recommends changing the cabin filter once a year, or sooner if the AC smells.
Vinegar or sour smell
Usually also mould or bacteria, sometimes stronger after rain or when humidity is high. It is treated the same way as a musty smell.
Sweet, syrupy smell
Take this one seriously. A sweet smell, sometimes with a film on the inside of the windscreen, can mean coolant is leaking from the heater core inside the dashboard. Coolant fumes are not healthy, and low coolant can lead to overheating. Have it checked soon.
Burning or electrical smell
Can come from a slipping drive belt, a failing AC compressor clutch, an overheating blower motor resistor, or wiring. Switch off the AC and get it checked; don't keep driving with a burning smell.
Fuel or exhaust smell
Fuel or exhaust fumes entering through the vents point to a leak in the fuel system or exhaust. This is a safety issue: open the windows and have it inspected straight away.
Damp smell with water in the footwell
The AC removes moisture from the air and drains it under the car. If the drain tube is blocked by dirt or insects, water backs up into the cabin and the carpet smells damp. Clearing the drain fixes it.
How to prevent AC smells
- Turn off the AC (keep the fan on) for the last few minutes of a drive. This helps dry the evaporator so mould has less chance to grow.
- Replace the cabin filter at least yearly; in Dubai dust, check it at every service.
- Use fresh-air mode from time to time instead of recirculation all the time.
- Don't leave wet items or food in the car.
- Have the system cleaned if a smell returns quickly after a filter change.
Air fresheners don't fix it
Sprays and clip-on fresheners only mask the smell. If the source is mould on the evaporator, it comes back, and some smells, like sweet coolant or fuel, are warnings you shouldn't cover up.
At Partinn Auto Service we replace cabin filters, clean and disinfect AC systems, clear drains and track down coolant, fuel and electrical smells. Our AC service package is AED 199 and includes filter cleaning; repairs are quoted separately. More about car AC repair · Car AC maintenance guide.
