How to Avoid Car Repair Overcharging in the UAE: 10 Practical Tips

· · 2 min read

Most garages in the UAE do honest work, but almost every driver has a story about a bill that grew or a repair that didn't fix the problem. Gulf News readers have described simple AC faults turning into expensive compressor jobs, and a reported Dubai car fire was linked by its owner to a cheap, poor-quality repair. These habits protect you, whichever garage you use.

1. Get a written estimate before work starts

Ask for an itemised estimate: parts, labour and anything optional listed separately. Agree that nothing extra is done without your approval.

2. Ask what was diagnosed, not just what will be replaced

"Your compressor is gone" should come with how they know: pressure readings, a leak test, fault codes. Good garages test before they replace.

3. Ask to see the old parts

A worn brake pad, a cracked hose, a leaking pump. A garage that did the work has nothing to hide.

4. Ask which parts are being fitted

Genuine, OEM-equivalent or aftermarket? Each has its place, but you should know which you are paying for. Part numbers or brands on the invoice help.

5. Be wary of "while we're at it"

Some extra work is genuinely due, such as brake fluid every two years. Other "recommendations" (frequent flushes, additives, replacing parts that test fine) add cost without benefit. Ask: what happens if I leave it until next service?

6. Watch for very low headline prices

A very cheap price can turn into a high final bill, or mean low-quality parts. Compare what is included, not just the number.

7. Don't accept repeated AC gas top-ups

AC gas is not used up. If it needs topping up again and again there is a leak, and it should be found and fixed. See our AC guide.

8. Get a second opinion on big jobs

For a gearbox, engine or other large repair, a second diagnosis is reasonable and common. Bring the first garage's fault codes and findings.

9. Check reviews, and how problems were handled

Read recent Google reviews. Every business gets the occasional complaint; what matters is how they respond.

10. Keep an itemised invoice

It is your service record, proof of what was done, and useful if you sell the car or need to follow up.

Red flags

  • Pressure to decide immediately, or "it's dangerous to drive" without a clear explanation
  • No written estimate, or a final bill much higher than agreed without your approval
  • Refusing to show old parts or explain the fault
  • Replacing several parts "to see which one fixes it"

How we work at Partinn Auto Service

We diagnose before replacing parts, explain what we found, give you an estimate, and only start once you approve. You can see the old parts and you get an itemised invoice. If a job needs dealer-only programming, we tell you. Dealer or independent garage?
